Anthony De Mello once wrote that; happiness is our natural state. That happiness – is in fact – the natural state of little children until a sustained exposure to the stupidity of society and culture, contaminates them.
The material world frames happiness through a means of acquisition. The attainment of wealth and goods, through a pursuit of self-indulgence.
Whereas the enlightened world cultivates happiness through a means of subtraction.
A simplification of self.
Meet a new friend of the podcast, and a custodian of the countryside; Jacob Tomkins.
Jacob ‘lays his hat’ in an ancient coppice – nestled within the Shropshire countryside. An off-grid project that allows Jacob to live symbiotically with nature.
I have spent many warm, rainy and cold afternoons in Jacob’s woods. And to be around Jacob is to be around a force of relinquished control. As you lean back into preconceived notions, this whirling dervish will leave you wondering – what on earth just happened?
He is, without a doubt – a psychedelic in human form.
We have to stop talking at some point in life and just get on with it. That’s the depth of all people. Everyone has an immense depth of ability to do.Jacob Tomkins
This is a conversation about waking up. About self-observation, self-discovery and leaning into what we have been conditioned to lean away from. It’s a reminder to housekeep our cultural conditioning, but above all, this conversation is a reflection on the beauty of unfinishedness.
‘Be more childlike – not childish’ – I’ve heard Jacob say to me on many occasions. That life; is not a pre-fabrication, but a magical woodland where our creations are only limited by our imagination and our willingness to do the work. To speak and live our truth is to live in alignment with who we really are.
As I firmly step into my second act I appreciate Jacob for his moments of lively inspiration, uncomfortable honesty and a constant reminder that life is delightful, life is easy and life is indeed magical.
Blessings and love,
